Vendor Spotlight: Cloudbeds for Independent Hotels, What Owners Like and What They Push Back On

Cloudbeds logo, the hotel property management system reviewed in this EscalanteIQ vendor spotlight

Cloudbeds is one of the first names independent hoteliers hear when they start shopping for a property management system. It is also one of the most debated. We work in Cloudbeds with independent hotels, and we hear both sides from owners. Here is a fair look, based on the company's own materials and what verified owners say in public reviews.

What it is

Cloudbeds describes itself as one platform that combines the property management system, booking engine, channel manager, payments, guest communication, revenue tools and marketing. The company says it was founded in 2012, works fully remote, and is trusted by tens of thousands of properties in more than 150 countries. Its site says the channel manager connects to 300+ online travel agencies.

Who it fits best

Independent hotels that want reservations, distribution and direct booking in one system. Cloudbeds' marketplace lists nearly 500 integrations, including point of sale, payments, door locks and accounting, and the company says its API is open and documented. Production access requires requesting credentials.

What owners like

On GetApp, Cloudbeds averages 4.3 out of 5 across 350 verified reviews. The themes in the positive reviews:

  • An interface owners call intuitive
  • Booking, reservation and rate management across channels in one place
  • Time saving automation
  • Support that many reviewers describe as quick, with 24/7 availability, live chat and onboarding staff
  • Good value for small properties, with flexible add ons

What owners push back on

  • Pricing clarity. Cloudbeds does not publish prices. Its site says pricing depends on property size and features and points buyers to a custom quote. Reviewers on GetApp report unclear pricing, unexpected charges, and essential features sitting in higher tiers.
  • Support after onboarding. Most reviewers praise it, but a minority say they struggle to reach live help. One verified review on Hotel Tech Report, from the managing partner of a small bed and breakfast, rated Cloudbeds 1 out of 5 and said support became hard to reach after onboarding and that phone support came at a premium fee. That is one owner's experience, not a verdict on the company.
  • Reporting. Reviewers mention limited reporting options, though that score on GetApp rests on only five reviews.

Seven questions to ask in the demo

  1. What is my total cost in writing: subscription, onboarding, add on modules and payment processing rates?
  2. Which features are in the tier you are quoting me, and which need an upgrade?
  3. What support channels, hours and response times come with my plan? Is phone support included?
  4. What happens at 9 p.m. on a Saturday when a channel stops syncing?
  5. Can you show me the exact reports I need, such as booking source and channel mix, and export them?
  6. Which of my current tools have certified integrations, and who supports me when one breaks?
  7. What are the contract term, cancellation terms and data export options?

Our take

Cloudbeds is a capable all in one system for independents, and the breadth is the draw. The risks cluster around price clarity and support after you sign, so settle both before you commit, in writing. Whatever platform you choose, make sure you can see which channel and which button on your website each booking came from. A booking engine only helps you fight OTA commission if you can prove where your direct bookings come from.
